5/6 Homework and Subject Learning

Our History driver project is: Maafa

This project teaches children about Africa past and present, with a particular focus on Benin. It traces the development of the slave trade and explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities that make up the African diaspora.

Geography: Our Changing World

This essential skills and knowledge project revises the features of Earth, time zones and lines of latitude and longitude to pinpoint places on a map. Children find out more about map scales, grid references, contour lines and map symbols. They learn about climate change and the importance of global trade. Children study patterns of human settlements and carry out an enquiry to describe local settlement patterns.

Guided Reading: Brand New Boy

When a new boy joins the class, everyone thinks he’s a bit strange, but he’s brilliant at football and loves crisps, and that’s all that matters to Dan and Maxie. However, the truth about George is stranger than anyone could have imagined… and more sinister, too. Can his new pals help him to become truly free?

English: Talk 4 Writing

In English this term we will be using the Talk 4 Writing style of teaching to produce a combination of fiction and non-fiction writing pieces. We will begin the term with an adventure narrative followed shortly by a non-chronological report linked to our driver topic.

Science:

Forces and Mechanisms

This project teaches children about the forces of gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, with children exploring their effects. They learn about mechanisms, their uses and how they allow a smaller effort to have a greater effect.

Earth and Space

This project teaches children about our Solar System and its spherical celestial bodies. They describe the movements of the Earth and the other planets relative to the Sun, the Moon relative to Earth, and the Earth's rotation to explain day and night.
